CENTER FOR MARCELO H. DEL PILAR STUDIES

Rationale and Historical Overview

Online archives are significantly important not just to educators, researchers, and professionals but also to the general public. This pandemic period brought us to our knees and taste a big blow to the educational sectors. However, in spite of the limited access to the physical establishment --online libraries and academic journals are very helpful both from students and professors. Still the available primary sources and studies for the other National Heroes as we called them--are still lacking especially if there is no relation with famous national heroes like Rizal and Bonifacio. Filipinos should be exposed to primary sources regardless of their educational attainment, most of us can browse the social media network and why we cannot do some browsing that will lead us to do some research about the life of these individuals who fought for the freedom of motherland. The importance of available primary resources elaborated by the US National Archives:

"Documents--diaries, letters, drawings, and memoirs--created by those who participated in or witnessed the events of the past tell us something that even the best-written article or book cannot convey. The use of primary sources exposes students to important historical concepts. First, students become aware that all written history reflects an author's interpretation of past events. Therefore, as students read a historical account, they can recognize its subjective nature. Second, through primary sources, the students directly touch the lives of people in the past. Further, as students use primary sources, they develop important analytical skills.

To many students, history is seen as a series of facts, dates, and events usually packaged as a textbook. The use of primary sources can change this view. As students use primary sources they begin to view their textbook as only one historical interpretation and its author as an interpreter of evidence, not as a purveyor of truth."

Plaridel is not new in proposing and leading a project for the benefit and improvement of the educational system in our country. In fact, he is the one who whispered Rizal to boost the morale of Women of Malolos about their mission to learn the Spanish language and the man behind and establishment of Agricultural school in our country:

"On January 21, 1888, Marcelo H. del Pilar efforts were instrumental in the drafting of a memorial proposal for the establishment of a school to the Governor of Bulacan, signed by the principalia and leading citizens of the province of Bulacan, proposing a popular contribution for the purpose of aiding the Treasury with the expenses of the establishment of a school authorized by the Ministry of Ultramar for the teaching of Arts, Trade and Agriculture. The Augustinians thus refused to have any part in the matter. This was the same project that was disapproved in 1872, on the flimsy suspicion of the authorities that the school might be used as a political club.

But del Pilar’s project won state support. Thus in 1889, a School of Agriculture was established in Manila, and in the following year, the School of Arts and Trades was opened. The efforts of Del Pilar had scored a victory for higher education in the Philippines." (Zapanta 1967:63)

The materialization of the establishment of state universities and of the present educational and training programs of TESDA was part of the idea and political strong will of Marcelo H. del Pilar to alleviate the slavery of ignorance of our people during the Spanish colonial period. Until now we have tested the efficacy of the contribution of Del Pilar to the establishment of educational institutions of higher education.

New historical data had been found that Marcelo H. del Pilar was not only a reformist-propagandist during his time. He was also the main brain behind the establishment of Katipunan and various secret societies. Documents were presented in one of the forums of the Department of Social Science and Philosophy and Departamento ng Agham Panlipunan (KSSP) of Bulacan State University last September 23, 2014.

A report from a Spanish Civil Guard Officer Manuel Sityar before the revolution erupted--a newspaper organ of KKK called "Kalayaan" was under the editorship of Marcelo H. del Pilar dated July 5, 1896. Recent discoveries like Bonifacio’s nome de Guerra Maypagasa, Spanish documents of the list of Filibusters and Rebels during 1896 reveals that Del Pilar has its own nome de Guerra “Maytiyaga” that really reflected and characterized the kind of personality of Del Pilar especially in performing his duty diligently to our motherland. Del Pilar has taught about the Anti-Bullying campaign he taught his daughter Sofia the prevention and how not to bully a person.

The study and teaching about the Life of Del Pilar will serve also as the preparation of the K-12 curriculum program for Local History. These are only research examples from the galaxy of works of not just a Provincial Hero of Bulacan, more of them are waiting to be discovered if the Provincial, Municipal, NGOs, Private agencies and Individuals, and the Bulacan State University will unite and extend their effort in supporting the noble objectives of the project.

Aside from that, a research study about the life and works of Marcelo H. del Pilar of The Journal of Communication SEECI (Spanish Society for the Study of Communication Iberoamericana) was founded in March 1997 by a group of teachers of Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Madrid (Spain) last 2000 stated that:

"Although Marcelo H. del Pilar has a mausoleum in Manila as one of its leaders, we believe that justice was not done with him, because he had one of the most enlightened minds, and undoubtedly was the main brain that pointed the way to the revolution after its death, and in their contacts with Deodato Arellano, was the inspiration for the Katipunan. We ask for the rehabilitation of "Plaridel ".

SEECI until now is asking for justice and rehabilitation of Plaridel the way Philippine Historiography belittle Del Pilar’s colossal participation in both Philippine Propaganda and Revolution. As Filipinos, the proponents moved to take some actions to propose this project to reexamine and to continue the study about the life, works, and sacrifices of Marcelo H. del Pilar in more intensive and extensive research for the primary sources, epistolarios, and other works of Plaridel by providing a free online Archive called "SINUPANG PLARIDEL" or an ARCHIVE for PLARIDEL.

If the international scholars had the courage to appeal in our patriotic sense about the undeniable immense contribution of Del Pilar as far as the freedom of the nation is concerned. We should be more courageous to pay back a debt of gratitude to the Man whose genius created this nation.

Plaridel's contribution to our nationhood must be properly documented in order to pass on his legacy for future generations.

By the establishment of this center, continuous study, and explore Marcelo H. del Pilar’s massive contribution in different fields of journalistic, communication, social science, and legal system.
